What is the Creighton Model System?

Read here to find out more about the Creighton Model System, and how to get started!

What is the Creighton Model System?

A method of natural family planning, the Creighton Model System allows women and couples to chart their fertility cycles naturally. Creighton is unique among NFP methods because it contains NaPro Technology. NaPro is a new women’s health science that works naturally with the procreative cycle.

Women and couples use the CrMS to achieve or avoid a pregnancy naturally (without using hormonal birth control or IVF), or to monitor a woman’s health. Because it is an individualized system, clients work 1:1 with a teacher called a Fertility Care Practitioner to learn how to use the Creighton Model System.

As a Fertility Care Practitioner, I can teach you about your fertility and help you understand what’s happening in each phase of your cycle. The cycle is often referred to as a woman’s fifth vital sign because it tells us so much about your health! I can also help identify certain red flags (called biomarkers) on your chart that may indicate need for further evaluation by a NaPro provider. Signs of conditions like hormone imbalance, unusual bleeding, PMS, infertility, effects of stress, recurrent miscarriage, and more can be observed from the chart alone. Charting is a great way to pursue root cause healing, take responsibility for your health in a new way, or simply to learn about your body!

How does it work?

Creighton works by learning to chart your cycles. By observing signs your body is giving you, you can understand if you are fertile or not on any given day.

CrMS clients learn how to observe day to day changes in their cervical mucus. Then, they document these changes by charting a stamp and description for each day. As a chart develops, women begin to recognize regular patterns in their cycles. Becoming more familiar with how your body communicates with you allows you to find some clarity in the mystery of understanding your cycles.

What is the Schedule?

Clients follow a typical timeline through the program, but rest assured, there is a lot of flexibility here! Following the Introductory Session, clients attend 1:1 Follow Up Sessions. During a Follow Up Session, the FCP does an in depth review of the chart with the client. They also provide further education, develop a personal protocol, and answer any questions that come up. At the beginning of the program, Follow Ups are closer together (every 2 weeks), in order to help the client grow in confidence quickly. As the client becomes more comfortable and confident in their charting, Follow Ups begin to space out. Typically, there are 8 Follow Up meetings within the first year of charting, but the schedule can be tailored to the client’s needs!

Who can use Creighton?

Creighton works for every season in a woman’s procreative life. Couples can use this system to achieve or avoid pregnancy naturally. Women can also use the system to monitor or learn more about their health and fertility. Teens can also learn a modified version of charting their cycles to help them understand the changes happening in their bodies and fix issues early! Creighton serves you in all of these seasons:

  • Regular cycles
  • Irregular cycles
  • Post birth control
  • Breastfeeding/postpartum
  • Perimenopause
